WorldChicago and Active English 2020 Digital Youth Leadership Program

Programma

Active English in partnership con WorldChicago propone un corso digitale di 2 ore al giorno per 10 giorni focalizzato a fornire ai teenager italiani una prospettiva di imprenditoria sociale negli Stati Uniti e ispirare la leadership e l’iniziativa. Questo corso offre crediti formativi!

  • Fornire ai giovani le capacità imprenditoriali necessarie per creare un cambiamento sociale di base
  • Esporre i giovani italiani al servizio dell'apprendimento nell'area di Chicago per promuovere una cultura di volontariato e filantropia
  • Migliorare la capacità inglese di comunicazione in contesti formali e informali.

 

WorldChicago proposes a 10-day digital exchange to the focused on providing Italian youth a perspective of social entrepreneurship in the US and to inspire leadership and initiative in Italian
youth.

  • Inspire Italian youth to be community leaders;
  • Promote an understanding of Chicago and the unique approaches taken to improve the city;
  • Equip Italian youth with the entrepreneurial skills necessary to create grassroots social change;
  • Expose Italian youth to service learning to promote a culture of volunteerism and philanthropy;
  • Provide a forum for Italian youth to create lasting and valuable relationships with U.S. peers;
  • Enhance English ability for communication in formal, and informal settings.

 

To achieve these goals, WorldChicago will:

  • Arrange leadership training by leading innovation and entrepreneurship coaches, demonstrating that all individuals have the skills to create positive change in their communities.
  • Provide significant interaction between Italian and U.S. peers, exposing the challenges Chicago youth face, and the unique solutions that have been designed.
  • Coordinate visits to innovative workshops and briefings by social change organizations, highlighting the common traits that can be found in successful organizations.
  • Inspire a service learning activity led by Italian youth, promoting responsive, proactive approaches to problem-solving.
  • Hold daily debriefings, ensuring that all programming is framed within the learning goals and build towards a project.

 

Schedule

Day One:

  • Program Orientation: WorldChicago will introduce themselves and the Digital Youth Leadership Program.
    WorldChicago will outline each day of the DYLP, program and participant expectations and
    program deliverables (including pitch ideas for a post-program volunteer project).
  • Introduction to Chicago and Social Entrepreneurship: Marc Rolfes, Senior Consultant for Social Venture Partners, will provide a brief history of Chicago, the challenges it has face and its current ascendance as a hub for social entrepreneurship. Mr. Rolfes will outline the tenets of a social venture and keys to sustainability.

 

Day Two:

  • Community Building Through Business; Katherine Bissell Cordova, Executive Director of Chicago Fair Trade, will provide a briefing on Chicago Fair Trade and its model of supporting producers both globally and in the Chicagoland area. Ms. Bissell Cordova will discuss what inspired her to start Chicago Fair Trade and how it has grown to support over 70 businesses.
  • Creating a Social Venture: Natasha Casanova, CEO of Kathmandu Yogi will discuss how she came to start her business. Ms. Casanova will share the core elements that go into business creation and how her social venture serves a business need in the U.S. and supports local craftspeople in Nepal.

 

Day Three:


  • Creating a Volunteer Project – Part One: Working Bikes rescues discarded bicycles and gives them new life by redistributing them as tools of empowerment in local and global communities. Locally, Working Bikes partners with homeless transition, refugee resettlement, and youth empowerment programs in Chicago to donate bicycles and put them to good use on the streets of our own community. Globally, Working Bikes ships thousands of bicycles each year to partners in countries throughout Latin America and Africa including El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Uganda, Ghana, and many others. Participants will learn about Working Bikes model to help communities and home to create a similar project in their home community.
  • Creating a Volunteer Project – Part Two: We All Code is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to sparking curiosity in coding among kids aged 7 to 17, with a focus on girls, students of color, and low-income students. Their mission is to introduce children to the fun of coding by providing free educational resources and hands-on classes. We all code will explain how they use a community of volunteer coders to teach computer science to underserved youth.

 

Day Four:

 

  • Youth Dialogue with Youth Diplomats (Session led by Youth Diplomats): WorldChicago’s Youth Diplomats is an 8-month experiential learning program to empower Chicago teens to be active global citizens. Youth Diplomats brings together 40 students once per month to discuss topics in global affairs and diplomacy and build essential skills in leadership and cross-cultural communication. During the Program, our Youth Diplomats will host two dialogues with program participants. This dialogue will include discussions on current events and common obstacles faced by both groups. Through this discussion, we hope that students can work on potential solutions to these obstacles and develop plans to be leaders in their communities. The first dialogue will be led by the Youth Diplomats, and the second will be led by the Italian Youth Leadership Program participants.

 

Day Five:

 

  • Grassroots Community Engagement: The Institute for Nonviolence Chicago’s mission is to replace the cycle of violence using the principles, teachings and practices of nonviolence to create the beloved community. Informed by a philosophy of nonviolence, the Institute establishes caring and sustained relationships with participants engaged in the cycle of violence. They emphasize partnerships with community members, leaders, social service providers, and local law enforcement to reduce community levels of violence. When COVID-19 began to ravage underserved urban communities, The Institute began to work as public health outreach workers aimed at saving lives. A representative of the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago will speak about the tenets of community building and how these services can be used to combat any community or organizational challenge, big or small.

 

Day Six:

 

  • Youth Dialogue on Civic Engagement The Mikva Challenge mission is to develop youth to be empowered, informed, and active citizens who will promote a just and equitable society. MC is comprised of several youth councils, all of which aim to use civic, democratic participation as a tool for community betterment. The Italian Youth will meet with a Mikva Challenge youth council. During this time, the Italian Youth will learn more about how Chicago youth advocate for community change and have improved the livelihood of local youth.

 

Day Seven:

 

  • Telling Your Story – Strategic PR Workshop One: Kevin Lampe is a political strategist, organizer, and media relations expert with Kurth Lampe. Lampe’s professional experience includes political campaigns ranging from local library boards to presidential campaigns. He served as an advance man for President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore. At the 2004 convention, he worked with then-State Senator Barack Obama to prepare his keynote address. Participants will learn about effective communication methods and develop strategies to promote their Social Impact Projects (volunteer projects).

 

Day Eight:
